2012 Inverness Whisky Festival Ambassador

March 14, 2012 by Admin

Perhaps better known as the formerly anonymous author, Belle de Jour, Dr Brooke Magnanti has a well publicised affinity with whisky, not least because it was through a blog post about the ‘water of life’ that revealed her true identity to the public. One of the greatest literary secrets of all time was exposed after an eagle eyed blogger recognised the style in which the whisky blog had been written, and alerted Belle de Jour that the Associated Press were about to publish her real name.

Her books were adapted for the ITV2 series’ Secret Diary of a Call Girl, starring Billie Piper, and Festival co-director Yvonne Murray explains how Brooke became to be the Whisky Festival‘s Ambassador. “I was watching old episodes of Secret Diary of a Call Girl over the weekend and decided to Google Belle de Jour to find out what had happened to her. It was then I discovered that Brooke liked whisky, and I read the blog post she had written about it. I decided to follow my own mantra for life that “fortune favours the brave” and so I loaded up Twitter to ask her if she fancied being our Ambassador. She accepted and we are now really looking forward to her attendance at this year’s festival. Brooke is a highly intelligent woman, and has a remarkable talent for writing – with her love of whisky, she was the ideal choice to be our Ambassador this year.”

Brooke Magnanti is a science researcher, and studied her PHD in Forensic Pathology at the University of Sheffield. Since her identity was revealed she has continued research as well as write and now lives in Lochaber and enjoys hill walking, kayaking and the odd dram.

Magnanti will be attending the festival to promote the delights of whisky, as well as launching a limited edition booklet featuring the original blog article she wrote. It will also feature her own drawings of botanical flowers, together with a fantastic insight into why she wrote the blog, and what living in Scotland means to her. Exclusively available at the festival, the booklets will be signed by Brooke and she will also sign copies of her older work in conjunction with Waterstone’s Inverness. Her newest book comes out this Spring.
